Personal recollections of the 1999 Blair Witch release: meeting Heather (Upper Darby), attending advanced screenings in Philly/Jenkintown, and early internet reactions with some viewers treating it like a documentary or believing the actor was dead (e.g., "some people thought that shit was a documentary").
Created 4 days ago • 94 documents • Range: 4/15 3:56pm – 4/15 9:23pmThe Matrix. I was like 6 when I saw it at home with my brother and father, and like 2-3 years later for Reloaded. It wasn't until I was 18-19 until I watched Revolution and I re-watched the other two before the fact. I guess being a kid and watching action scenes was still cool, but I obviously (+)
Too young or perfect timing! I saw Jaws in an over sold theater! They legit set up folding chairs/let people sit on the floor! 70’s man! I didn’t swim in Lake Michigan for the entire summer. My best friends bro convinced us sharks could get in thru the St. Lawrence seaway and adapt to fresh water 😅!
there was a LOT of "wouldn't it be fucking terrifying to be a mouse or other small woodland creature" about and it definitely had an impact, watership down and animals of farthing wood also emotionally devastating but politically formative 😂
"Probably the most extreme was "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex" when I was 10, thanks to unsupervised HBO on the TV in the basement. I didn't understand how Gene Wilder could be in love with a sheep, but I thought the monster boob attacking people was hilarious. 😁"
I wasn’t going to bother posting but this was also my answer to the question
Event Horizon My parents were out of town at a conference and I was supposed to be staying at my grandmother's place down the street. She had a cat though and my allergies were going crazy. So I got permission to go home and stay the night by myself. I was maybe 12 or 13 at the time?
Poltergeist 3. I watched it with a babysitter who repeatedly said throughout, “I don’t think we should be watching this” until it was “I don’t think we should have watched that.” For years afterwards I had recurring nightmares about my reflection trying to kill me. I still don’t really like mirrors.
Oh! I met Heather from Blair Witch right when it came out in 1999 at the old school movie theater in Jenkintown. She's from Upper Darby. This was early internet days so some people thought that shit was a documentary and some people were like I thought you were dead. Lol. Simpler times.
When VTRs were still relatively new, one of my teachers was told to rent Watcher in the Woods, a Disney film, for the class to watch. Apparently confused by the alliteration, she instead got Last House on the Left and buggered off to the teachers lounge immediately after starting it...
"Omega Man with Charlton Heston when I was about 8 - The Fog when I was 10"
My Dad brought me to see ‘Jaws’ in 1975. I was five. Ticket guy tried to stop us and my father was having none of it. Funnily enough, the only bit that sticks in memory is the bit where Brody is making faces with his youngest.
Snowfall, Rent, Pose and Boyz N The Hood are fundamental watches for me because they cover the epidemics that jacked up my family so bad that when I was born they projected those fears onto me. Like I don’t think a lot people understand what it’s like growing up in the aftermath of the 80s.
Hoo boy. Where do I start? My dad's idea of bonding with me before going to secondary school was to put on 15/18 cert films on a Friday night, especially horror. I saw the original Alien Trilogy, The Shining, Nightmare On Elm Street, any Stephen King adaptation, Robocop, and Goodfellas.

I saw VHS version of Lost Highway on a tv in a basement in the middle of the night when i was a kid. That seemed like the ideal way to experience the movie. It was terrifying in a way that digital just can’t match.
Aliens. I'm not sure how old exactly I was, but definitely under 10 yo. Had to switch from top bunk bed to bottom because I was afraid the xenomorphs would come through the ceiling, couldn't go to the toilet alone for weeks because I thought a face hugger would come through the sewer 😅
I downloaded an HQ 1080 mp4, but you can see it here, for free! If you loved the original Omen (1976) - you may enjoy this! www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Eeo...
