They don't actually care about the things they talk about - fiscal conservatism, free markers, moderation in action, promoting democracy and capitalism abroad - these are all just smokescreens for legislating bigotry. This is an unkind thing to say, but it describes their revealed preferences.

They didn't have Bush's undeniable failures to blame for why America rejected conservativism. They honestly thought that if they just say that Bush failed conservativism but conservativism didn't fail - America would put them back in power.

That's how the far right operates. Be angry about everything and whip up dissatisfaction among voters. No realistic solutions, simply be mad at everything and promise to tear it all down.
