Posts critique Elon Musk and Tesla (Powerwalls, solar roof, innovation), reference 'Tesla stans', recount an influencer who “didn't know the words 'Alpitronic Hypercharger'”, and include comments on charger placement (parking garages/supermarkets vs gas stations) and personal travel choices (bus vs driving).

I ended up in conversation with someone who is a pretty big deal in Tesla circles. Had influence with Elon etc. He didn't know the words "Alpitronic Hypercharger" 🧵"
I argue they do, because their data compares them vs a plurality of cars on the road, including highways which massively increase fatalities. We’d all need to drive modern cars with lane keep assist, radar assisted braking etc, at 30mph on side streets for an apples-to-apples comparison.

Are programmers not humans? Humans make mistakes, machines will exceed human ability. You trust in machines (and programmers) each time you use a red light, a banking machine, a calculator. Verify, sure, but humans aren't inherently fault-intolerant.

@michaelhobbes.bsky.social's posts have radicalized me on this. What if I'm running from terrorists trying to hit my car with a helicopter and I have to go faster? What then, huh?

I moved to Portugal from Seattle 4.5 years ago. Figured I’d ship over my Model 3 - importing ICE vehicles is 👀 cost prohibitive but EV’s are practically free. But I also wanted city living and am now very happy to walk, metro or rideshare as necessary. (Also city driving sucks.)
"NTSB says that Level 2 systems like Ford Blue Cruise and Tesla Autopilot don't improve road safety, In fact, they may worsen it b/c automakers overestimate their capabilities. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy: “These systems function primarily as convenience features rather than safety enhancements.""
How much was spent on this study which result is just …. Of course it wouldn’t?

I actually think having chargers in places like parking garages and supermarkets is better than having them at gas stations, BUT I agree with all of the rest of this.

I don’t wanna be “anti-progress” or anything but idk, I just don’t think I’d ever feel safe without a human being behind the wheel y’know. I’m game for more public transport and EVs but self-driving stuff puts me on edge, I like a fleshy brain behind the controls

In general, as much of an old fart take as this is, I just don’t know if I can ever trust a robot to control a vehicle I’m in without human supervision. I have no qualms getting in a human-driven bus or train but I don’t think I could ever hail a robo-taxi regardless of how good the technology gets

When GM or whomever shows drivers taking their hands off the wheel, there are disclaimers, but the fact remains that when you flip that switch, the company is legally taking responsibility. Tesla does not boast the same for their autonomous driving, other than for their exceedingly limited robotaxi.

When I got a car after a few tears of not having one many years ago I thought I’d drive it everywhere but actually I found myself taking the bus quite a but just to give myself a break from the terrible traffic if the cities I was living in. It took longer but I saw it as a rest.

Swiping is one of the least secure options when using a credit card. Using a chip or nfc/tap to pay is much more secure, since the chip encrypts the credit card number and the merchant’s transaction id (and pin) together for the bank.

Compare this to cooking. In theory a restaurant, producing at scale, can make food more efficiently than you can, so it should be cheaper to constantly get takeout than to own a kitchen. But, we all know it saves money to cook your own chow in the kitchen! Takeout every day would ruin you.

It all comes back to how bad of a business person Musk actually is. The Tesla home energy stuff, like the Power Walls and the solar roof tiles, are all dead in the water. Tesla's innovation is dead and as Musk gets more involved at SpaceX, you can bet the wheels will fall off there as well.

Alpitgronic Hypercharger are a really underrated prog rock band. They never reached the mainstream success of Genesis but were just as present within the scene and get cited as an influence by a lot of musicians.

This just isn’t true. LiDAR has advantages to be sure, but it’s the software that’s most important. When you look at actual results Tesla is ahead. I do think LiDAR can help other manufacturers get better more quickly or with less training data.
Uber CEO in new interview: "By 2029, we think that we will facilitate more autonomous and robotaxi rides than anyone else in the world; When the day comes that those Teslas are safe with a camera only approach, we'd love to have those Teslas on our platform as well. (via Moonshot pod)
