Comments compare large pickups vs Kei trucks (calls large pickups “rolling prisons”; Kei trucks ~80% efficiency vs big ones 30–40%), mention Mercedes manufacturing in Alabama and a video link, express preference for the Toyo 4Runner (“love my 4Runner”) and disappointment when Toyota removed six‑cylinder engines.

Age alone might be why it sucks so much, so maybe just new and upgraded might be enough. Made a huge difference when I did that. Tires too. If you go from 17 to 16" rims (for example) and get a deeper sidewall, might help.
"Alabama is in the news again. Mercedes is crushing it, allegedly, (but I still like the Toyo 4runner better than anything on the Merc-Benz menu). TFW vehicle factories are as antiseptic as an operating room… https://blossom.primal.net/440803b82d404de74baaceab110c44bcca7122ff879c073ac9a03c38b16af634.mov"
love my 4Runner, had 2, but they lost me when they got rid of the six cylinders.

Um, those "big" pick up trucks are mostly just rolling prisons with a small bed attached. All the towing capacity of the engine goes to just moving the body of it. The Kei trucks get about 80% efficiency, while the big ones only get about 30-40% efficiency, because of all the weight of the bodies.
We were in Italy last year. One of our drivers was entertaining us with talk of where he was driving us (up lovely, TINY, winding hills) and he said “i’ve never seen one of your big pick-up trucks. Are they really so big?” Yes. They are gigantic. No way they would fit up those Italian hillsides.
