Discussion on treating the 'Midwest' as a single region, citing Michigan/Senator Slotkin and contrasts with Idaho, Kansas City and the Mountain West. Mentions campaign messaging and state/regional identity; includes quote: "Show up in Idaho or Kansas City and run a campaign on 'I'm from Michigan, the middle of the country just like you' and they would eat you alive."

That’s why we have to listen to the Midwesterners.” -Elissa Slotkin, basically You represent them, you’re out here calling them closed-minded. Gtfo.
Not to mention is was centrists like Slotkin abandoning the New Deal that made folks in rural & smalltown America think Democrats had abandoned them. One of the key points in recent @smettler.bsky.social book "Rural vs Urban." My author interview: barnraisingmedia.com/a-strategy-t...
"I have a lot of problems with Elissa Slotkin, but the sensitivities that coastal liberals and progressives have toward being told that we should prioritize the middle class and the geographic middle of the country is not one of them."
Zohran Mamdani doesn’t happen without Milwaukee sewer socialism. You don’t get labor rights without Chicago, Flint, and Minneapolis standing and fighting the cops in the 1930’s and shedding literal blood, just like the coasts.
I call it mush brain. She thought she’d come up with a winner of an idea - a catchy line - encompassing current but prevailing nonsense about “east coast elites and pointy headed libs” and “west coast hippies”, along with ”solid, salt of the earth mid-westerners”. And then calls it a theory.
I have a theory: aligning behind universal principles like healthcare, affordability, anti-corruption, anti-monopoly, strong unions, treating *all* of the people in this country with dignity according to their human and constitutional rights works as well in the middle as on the coasts
"Show up in Idaho or Kansas City and run a campaign on "I'm from Michigan, the middle of the country just like you" and they would eat you alive."
She's in the business of keeping neoliberals and zionists in control of the DNC.
"Sorry but it’s weird to me that so much rhetoric from pundits and even actual Dem politicians concedes that even if the citizenship of all Americans technically formally equal, it is not morally equal. “Coastal women are lesser Americans than southern/midwest men” No they’re not. That’s not true."
So you think the American from the area that allows reproductive freedom and the American from the backwards GOP christofascist states are equal and have the same rights?
"Show up in Idaho or Kansas City and run a campaign on "I'm from Michigan, the middle of the country just like you" and they would eat you alive."
True. I grew up in Idaho. Michigan meant “Detroit” to us. Mountain west identity is distinct. Even Colorado was “the plains.”
"Show up in Idaho or Kansas City and run a campaign on "I'm from Michigan, the middle of the country just like you" and they would eat you alive."
Poor move Elise. Be better.

State and regional identity is a massively important factor in any campaign's messaging strategy, you have to show you share or (if running for president) at least understand it. But there's no such template that's the same in AL and IN and MT and NM. The very premise is insulting condescension.

I honestly don't think anyone is going to be prepared for the backlash that has been building for decades against "flyover country folk" with huge unearned chips on their shoulders once it is unleashed.
