Huge fire in Scotland triggers train chaos, partial collapse of historic building www.yahoo.com/news/article... @bellacaledonia.bsky.social
They experimented with an Ayr-Edinburgh train (just joining together an Ayr-Glasgow service with a Central-Waverley via Motherwell one). It went into Central, sat for 20mins then reversed back out. Think lockdown put paid to it, but it’s not a true reflection of how popular a proper one would be.
"The Union St fire is so intense, it's hard to say just what devastation it will bring to the City Centre yet. I hope we will see this eventually under control, & urgent discussions by all levels of Government & owners to assist rebuilding a true cornerstone of Scotland's busiest railway station 💚"
Heartbreaking
"1/ THREAD ; You might see the below image going around being circulated regarding the Union St fire in Glasgow. It's AI slop. pure AI slop. Relatively convincing if you don't know the place, but 100% Fake. Don't share it - debunk it. Lets go into more depth...."
Oh ffs Graham sit down. Stop trying to explain things that you know nothing about .
Totally agree, just have to look across the street and see the shambles that the Egyptian Halls are to see the state things have been in. Hopefully this will be a wake up call.

The Hielan Man's umbrella refers to this bridge being used as a meeting place for young Highlanders who had moved to Glasgow probably late 19th/early 20th century.

Oh I remember pointing that somewhere (possibly on the original thread I found the image on). A great losss, as much as the o2 on suaciehall street. AI should do one.
Maybe you don’t live in Glasgow but most people wouldn’t say “the newsagents adjacent to central station” they would say the newsagents at central station. As the many titles on videos and photos shared confirm (and many of the articles also referring to the buildings as at glasgow central).
If it helps, the reporting I have seen this morning indicates they managed to keep it mostly to the station area and the residential area nearby is fine, and zero casualties. The building damage is immense, though. That dome dates back to like 1850, plus all the biz and trains can't stop.

7/ A guide for recognising disinformation and misinformation - basic media literacy - is vital to survive in the modern day with convincing at a quick glance trash like this out there. Here's what it actually looks like from google street view, Jun 2024.
Wrong corner of the street, wrong wording on the bridge. That’s not even what the actual street looks like. Using ai to spew a fake image of an actual ongoing incident is just ghoulish. Fuck this genAi garbage - what should have burned down last night and not that lovely old building. #fuckAi
A local community group has missed out on a bid to purchase the historic St Columba's Parish Church in Largs. The Church of Scotland has revealed that an offer has been accepted for the historic building but cannot confirm who the winning bidder was. Story 👇 www.heraldscotland.com/news/2590764...
I read this morning that Glasgow Central station is closed after a battery fire yesterday caused a neighbouring building to collapse. Some trains will run through the station but none will stop there. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/mar/09/glasgow-central-station-closed-fire Are any […]
Agreed - the suggestion seemed to be a relaxed attitude to for prevention where an incident might be convenient. The Glasgow Central fire seems to be very different, in a busy building and with impacts exacerbated by location :(
"Great news that Glasgow Central station doesn't seem to be impacted by last night's fire. Stunning station with the world's fanciest Krispy Kreams"
That's factory incorrect Krispy kremes is on the opposite side of the building to Union Street. Image below shows the side of the building affected current status unknown as there is no access to the station.
If you're new to commenting on Glasgow fires, here's a few starter phrases to get you rolling: "Surprised it wasn't a bank holiday!" "That'll be student flats soon enough!" "It's all part of <insert party>'s agenda!" "Can't remember the last time I was up town!" "Yet there's money for cycle paths!"

Firefighters are still working on the fire. 18 hours later. It was massive. It’s amazing no one died. Sending much sympathy from the east coast. www.scotsman.com/regions/glas...
That fire happening on International Women’s Day is a timely reminder that men are and will always be the problem. While women marched in many cities across the world, many women chose to stay at home in Glasgow to avoid crowds of drunk men, abuse or assault, groping in public transport etc 1/2
"absolutely hate the faux savvy instinct you see online that every fire in Glasgow is deliberate and is to clear the way for student flats. not saying that never happens! but usually these are buildings that you put at the top of the “fire risk” list anyway: old, unoccupied, poorly maintained"
not to mention that in this case we literally know it’s a vape shop fire as OP says!

"This is the building destroyed in the fire last night, an iconic Glasgow streetscape demolished by a vape shop."
Vape shop, huh? Glasgow's streets are burning, and it's not just the fire that's a problem.

"I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage."
Nitrogen release in a sealed room would stop it too I guess, but anybody in the room would die.
It was once part of the Central St hotel. Stars of screen & rock & roll once stayed there. From Laurel & Hardy, Even Roy Rodgers (who rode his horse Trigger through the lobby) to the Rolling Stones. I was sad when the Barrie Bru sign came down, But at least the dome was still there. Now gone.
Capitalist landlords don't really give a fuck as long as the rent is paid. Wider questions must be asked of GCC. I'm sure SF& Rescue will forensically comb the scene for evidence. But I hope this brings about tighter controls in the city. God Bless all who tried to save this once, Iconic building.
I ❤️ Glasgow so I'm reposting this thread re the culture of the city (sex & chips). So, ages ago (when I didn't live here) I visited my daughter. We had dinner up at the bar near her pad. High excitement cos the barman, I swear to God, *winked* at me. Now I was 51 & (as you know) a serious novelist.

Fingers crossed. I guess we will hear more today but the structural engineers will probably take a while to assess all the ajoining buildings. There must be a really good party-wall to the south of where the fire started as the fire never moved that way and there was no wind last night.
