the problem is lead acid is a bad battery for the use, and its all we had mostly. it also was not suitable for flying/boats for the longest time. flying is just getting there for battery tech. boats had it good with sailing but got too big!

Amount per week doesn't really matter - its amount per day really. Avondale is about 60km each way so lets say you need around 200km min range if you mostly want to charge at home. LOTS in that bracket. A 40kwh leaf, or basically anything newer than about 2018...

The constant stop starts make it a great place for a small EV.

There are a lot of things that I look forward to with EVs - and I say this as someone who still drives a gas-powered car, but I think the biggest is a quieting of roadways.

Bringing up my hobbyhorse: battery-swapping at established swapping/charging locations along sea lanes solves the EV shipping range problem. Battery-swapping is already done for some shipping within China. This solution could work! I think, anyway.

While not exactly the same as an EV power source, the electric vehicle performance is still a valid argument. Using a battery and solar panels as on previous rovers was shown to be less successful as dust covered the solar panels. SNAP generators have been in space before.

Oh they can be insanely evil. My family member lives in one and there’s nothing on offer at all, and I’ve heard people say that their HOA installed level 2 charging and wants people to say $200 yearly plus over $100 a month if they want to use them. No sorry, a 3000% markup is not okay.

Oh for God's sake, just let everyone in and see who can survive in some of the toughest markets for EV. After all, market demands should dictate what's sold or can be sold and not those damn politicians!

PHEV is really the sweet spot. Especially if your daily commute is short enough that it falls within the EV window (typically under 40-50 miles roundtrip per day)

Not sure why you're explaining this at me. A hybrid like the prius is much closer to the rover, since it has actual electric motors driven by a battery that charges during use. The battery in an IC vehicle just turns the starter.

I tried to dip my toe into the EV pool over a decade ago with a Prius plugin. At the time charging it at home made my electric bill unaffordable and there were not many public chargers around.

Yes and no on the EV chargers themselves. Using the OpenEVSC as an example it has an electro-mechanical contactor inside. That's what I expect to fail first. Mine is in my garage so the solidstate parts should be fine. Out in the environment the solidstate components are far more likely to fail.

We've had our phev Kia Niro for almost 2 years now, usually go at least 1k miles between fillups, averaging 120 mpg.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the EVs no go vroom vroom crowd. Don't get me wrong I appreciate a nice sounding engine, I will miss that aspect of cars. But it's certainly not a priority.

I’ve been able to manage with an EV in a condo despite not having charging in the building. A charge lasts me a long time, and I can refill visiting nearby family (with home chargers), or down the road there’s a public garage with charging at which I can leave it overnight for <$20, to top up.

I live in a recent apartment building (2021) and they went with the route of having 4 shared EV charging spots in the underground garage. Anyone who has an EV or a PHEV and doesn’t already have an assigned spot indoors can just request a remote to have access to said garage. It’s great value added!

You'll probably get a lot of BYD Seals, which are one of China's bestsellers and has 150 kw charging (~30 mins) and 200-300 miles of range like many of the affordable models over there.

The biggest issue is storage. We have loads of abandoned mines that with very little engineering could home gravity batteries. Most people won't even be able to wrap their heads around converting electrical energy to potential energy for release when needed. Doesn't mean we shouldn't do it

Batteries really are the sexiest tech out there for me at least. The vision of creating so much excess power and having a place to put it is the future.
