I think he's proud of being British as he's fine with Scotland's needs being overruled by people not living in Scotland. Weird concept to defend tbh ( works best when you grew up in England I suppose)
"In 2019, I ran a conjoint experiment asking Brits about attributes of a good citizen. We see supporters *of all parties* valuing nativity as an important characteristic of good citizenship. I suspect these views have only calcified in time. journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1..."
Wow, UKippers/ReFuk/MAGA all seem to think they are Christian. An they're all thorough breds. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Scots voters chose to be part of the United Kingdom in 2014. Thats only 3 political cycles ago. The pro UK message landed in 2014. But is on the slide. Scots have democracy in oor veins & like the Dem voters in the USA, they will use democracy to win. Yet Westminster deny us oor democracy.
Just wondering about those UK citizens, like my daughter, who acquired Irish citizenship (without setting foot in Ireland) following Brexit. They now have dual citizenship, so being consistent, they are all now subject to having their UK citizenship revoked given the right circumstances.
David I think the Begim case underlines exactly why differentiating between citizens is inacceptsble - once you create a “second class” category of citizens with weaker rights then governments will be tempted to expand that second class group. Exactly what has already happened here.

How do you frame a question like this to Scottish people who have a different view on the Union than you do? My partner doesn’t see things like that in any way, for instance, yet he is a very proud Scot.
The proportion of people who think you must be born British to be truly British has almost doubled, from 19% in 2023 to 36% in 2025. But the majority (51%) still believe being British is something you can become with effort. Read more here: www.ippr.org/articles/the...
Every so often a British person of colour offends the chattering classes to the extent that they are willing to overrule 1000 years of habeas corpus to just make them go away I said this in 2014 and 2019 and it’s still true today www.politico.eu/article/brit...
I’ve always believed we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Yet still surprised at those calling for removal of dual national’s UK citizenship when they themselves, by descent or religion, would be vulnerable to same fate should a future government dislike what they say.
‘Im a foreign born child of Brit and immigrant who is very conscious of all this every time a form asks for nationality and place of birth. Pretty sure I’m not the primary target of this vicious BS but it all has a way of spreading.
Oh, obv we’d also have to do something that the Home Secretary considered v bad. But that’s somehow not terribly reassuring these days… & likely to get less so in future, I can imagine a future where Home Secretary Lee Anderson considers me (like Begum, a Brit-born child of an immigrant) undesirable
“When asked what made a good British citizen, the most popular answers were obeying the law (64%), raising children to be kind (62%) and working hard (48%). Just 8% said it involved sticking up for British-born people above other groups, and 3% said it involved having white skin.” TL;DR a minority
NEW BLOG: Ethno-nationalist views have doubled since 2023, but most people still think Britishness is about shared values, not ancestry. Our new blog digs into the polling — and sets out why progressives need alternative vision of the nation, fast. Read here: www.ippr.org/articles/the...
Presumably they want UK by descent and born in UK. Both of these are nonsense but by descent without the weird eugenics at least means you cannot accidentally be stateless which is illegal under international law — but nonetheless happened to me. And UK took me in (through descent).
